Abigail Adams: Aruged that the Declaration of Independence should include women.

Articles of Confederation: First laws governing the new Nation that gives states more power than the federal Government.

Battle of Lexington And Concord: First Battle of the Revolutionary war.

Battle of Saratoga: Turning piont of the war when France and Spain became our allies.

Battle of Yorktown: Last battle of the Revolutionary war where General Cornwallis
Serendered to George Washington.

Benjamin Franklin: As he signed the Declaration of Independance he said we must all hang together or we shall hang separetly.

Boston Massacre: The clash between British troops and a group of Bostonians five colonis were killed.

Betsy Ross: Is said to have sewn the first American Flag.

Boston Tea Party: When the sons of liberty dressed as Indians and destroyed a tea shipment after the Tea tax was passed.

Committees of Correspondence: Started by Sammuel Adams, Who asked members to write letters to the other colonist to inform them.

Commen Sence: Pamphlet written by Thomas Paine which encouraged colonist to become intependent from Brittain.

Declaration of Independance: Written Mainly by Thomas Jefferson, declared our independance from Brittain adopted by the colonist on July, 4, 1776.

First Coninental Congress: Metting where members of the comittees of correspondance met and voted to ban all trade with Britain and to begin forming Militias.

Francis Marion: During the Revolutionary war led Quzrilla Attacks in South Caralina and was know as the Swamp Fox.

George Washington:Chosen to lead the Continental Army by the second continental congress because he was wealthy, Southern, and he had millitary experience.

Green Moutain Boys: Militia led by Rthan Allen, and Benedict Arnold during the revolutionary war. They attacked Fort Ticonderge and captured heavy artillery and cannons which were used to drive the brittish from Boston.

Intoleroble Acts: Laws passed parliament to punish Boston for the Boston Tea Party  that did four things:
1. Closed the port.
2. Put boston under millitary rule under General Thomas Gage.
3. Required Bostonians to house Brittish troops.
4.  Allowed Brittish to do anything they wanted.
John Paul Jones: American naval officer whi is know for saying I have not yet began to fight on a sinking ship.

John Hancock: When signing the Declaration of Independance  he used very large print. so that King Geoge The Third could read his signiture with out his reading glasses.

King George the Third: King of England during the Revolutionary War.
Boyalists: Colonistis who remanded loyal to Brittain.

Marquis de Lafayette: French nobleman who helped George Washington train the Continental Army.

Minutmen: Patriots who had to be ready at a minutes notice.

Nathan Hale: Colonial spy captured by the Brittish and remembered for saying I only regret i have only one life to give to my country.

Patrick Henry: Urged the Virginia colonial  assembly to begin a militia with his speech ... Give me liberty or give me  death.

Pual Revere: Colonal who rode to lexington & Concord to waken  the minutmen to fight against brittish troops and to warn Sammuel Adams & John Hancock to escape capture.

Patriots: Colonists who sided with the minutmen.

Proclamation of 1763: Law passed  by parliament that only allowed the colonists to live east of the Appalachian Mountains in order to Help keep the peace after the French & Indian War.

Quartering act: Required the colonies to provide houseing and supplies for Brittish Troops statined in Newyork & later in Boston.

Sammuel Adams: Started the committees of Correspondance leader of the son's of liberty.

Second continental congress: Colonists that met regulary before and during the revelutionary war and which was the group that asked Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independance  this group was responsible for governing the colonists during the war.

Stamp tax: Tax on paper  products.

Townshend acts:  Tax's passed by Parliment that did four things:
1. Suspended the New York Colonial assembly.
2. Taxed glass, paper, paint, lead, and tea.
3. Required all taxes  to be paid in ether gold or silver coins.
4. Allowed Brittish troops to search and seize with out  warrants.

Valley Forge: Place where George Washington spent a very cold winter with his troops during the Revolutionary war.

Treaty of Paris: Peace treaty signed by Britian and the United States that ended the revolutionary war.

Amendment: An addition to the Constition.

Anti Federalist: Person who wanted the states to have more power than the central government also  wanted a bill of rights.

Bill of rights: The first ten amendments to our constituion first suggested by Thomas Jefferson.

Cabinet: Formal group of advisors to the president.

Constitution convention: Meeting in Philadelphia in 1787 to revise the articles of confederation.

Checks a & Balances: System that allows one branch of government to limit the power of  two other branchs.

Compromise: settlement of differences in which each side gives up some of it's demands in order  to reech an agreement.

Due Process: The right to fair treatment under tha law.

Executive Branch: President and cabinet they enfore the  law's.

Electoral College: Delegates from each states who chooses the president.

Federalism: the sharing of power between a central government  and it's subdivitions.

Federalist: person who supported the new constition believed in a strong central government.

Founding fathers: American leaders delegates to the constitution convention.

The great Comprimise: Two houses of congress would be developed.

Alexander hamilton: Wrote a report telling what was wrong with the articles of confederation called for a special convention to consider ways to strenghthan them.

House of represenative: Lower house of congress based o population.

Impeach: To bring an offical to trial for misconduct in office.

Judicial Branch: Supreme court they interpret the laws.

Legislative Branch: Congress  the senate and house of representatives  they make the laws.

James Madison: Know as the father to the constitution.

The preamble: States the porpase  and gives the resons why  the constitution was written.

Ratify: To approve.

Republic: A nation where he power is held by citizens who oelect representatives to manage the government.

Seperateion of powers: divition of power between all three branchs of government.

Shays rebellion: The attemp by farmers to stop local courts from imprisoning debtors.

Senate: Upper house of congress two per state.

Three fifes Comprimise : Decided how slaves would be counted for a population count. Five slaves =  three people.

Veto: presidential power to reject a bill.

Administration: Term of office.

Jay treaty: With britain caused them to withdraw claim to land in the ohio river valley.

John Marshall: Appointed 2nd cheif justice of the supreme court.

Aarron Burr: Recieved  equal  # of votes as Thomas jefferson for president and killed hamiltion in a duel.
